And Mama's Cookin' Too!

As Annie reminded me, I once had to call the fire department, but it had nothing to do with the kids. (But let me think. By the end of this post, I'll figure out how to make it their fault!)

Thanksgiving was, and continues to be, a very important family holiday for me. But it could sure get hectic! So one year I decided to bake five different pies—all at the same time. My oven was plenty big, but not—as you'll see—fireproof. All the pies were cooking when suddenly the buttermilk pie boiled over and caught fire. First thing I knew, the whole oven was ablaze, and kids were jumping up and down yelling "Fire! Fire!" The fire department was just down the road, so they responded pretty quickly. I don't remember exactly what they did, but the fire was put out, the pies were saved (and one went home with the firemen, who must have shared a joke with each other, because they just laughed and laughed), and Thanksgiving went on just the same.

Oh, yes. The kids were really, really distracting, which could have been the reason I wasn't immediately aware of the situation.
